New Jersey, Part 2: The Bad

Ok, so there was one bad thing that happened on our trip, and it was all my fault: I TRIPPED and FELL while carrying Sody. Waaaaah!!!! You can imagine my horror and tears at the situation. We were at the zoo, having fun, and I had Sody in the baby carrier strapped to my front so she could see the animals. Walked down a small set of stairs and missed the last one or something (I still can't figure out what happened) and all of the sudden - splat! We were on the ground. (Note to self: steps + Dansko clogs + 18 lbs of baby attached to you = bad combo) My knees thankfully took the brunt of it but she did bonk her head at some point of the mess because we found a pink mark on her head. She cried for a couple of minutes, got over it, was acting like her normal happy self...but since head bonking and six month olds and nervous mothers don't mix, we headed to the emergency room to get her checked out. She's fine! We all survived the first fall and first emergency room visit and I would be perfectly ecstatic if that was the last one too.

Feel free to send me any dropping-your-baby stories because it makes me feel better to hear I am not the only one!

  1. Actually, a week or so before Memorial Day, I missed a step going down my front porch holding max in my arms, and made myself veer off into the bushes so I wouldnt hit cement with him. I spiked both of my big toes (Barefoot) on the concrete and messed them up really bad. Couldnt go to work the next day, blood everywhere etc. Max was perfectly fine and happy. Dad was in a lot of pain.

  2. thank you! sucks about your toes but i appreciate this story! it's funny (and reassuring) to think of how we automatically protect our children in these situations...you went to the bushes, i flung my arm around sody's head as we were falling, etc. glad max is ok!

  3. I let Oliver roll off the changing table once. I was kneeling down, looking for something under the table and he rolled off. Luckily he bounced off my head and mostly landed in a drawer full of clothes. He was totally fine, just some small bruises on his arms and legs and bit shaken up. I felt so irresponsible and guilty that I had to beg him to forgive me for the next day or so. I am sure he forgot the whole thing in about 5 minutes. I however, am permanently scarred by the incident.

  5. Dan failed to mention that oliver was sitting up right facing him on the table, and while dan was bending down to get something from the bottom drawer, oliver bent over to look down too and went head first. My story - well, the bed wasnt at the very lowest level yet and oliver was standing to the side of his crib, reaching over when he reached so far causing top heavy unbalance, then he toppled out head first - ther was something there he landed in to break his fall (although plastic instead of the carpet floor). The bed went down to its lowest level after that! We've also watched him lose his balance while looking up at something and just timber backwards (while sitting) and clunk his head. You should go to youtube link and see his latest videos!

  6. Ah, just wait until you pull one like the time Jett was jumping off the couch and I told him that he could "totally go higher than that" ... so he did, and then when he landed, he slipped on a Lego, fell face first into a table, and split his chin open. Yeah. Still feeling some guilt over that one.
